5 Mistakes Not to Make When Visiting Playa Flamingo

Playa Flamingo is one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful and welcoming beach towns. But like any great destination, a little local knowledge goes a long way. To help you make the most of your time here, we’ve put together a few common mistakes travelers sometimes make, and how you can easily avoid them.

Underestimating the Heat

Playa Flamingo’s dry season brings endless blue skies, golden sunsets, and perfect beach weather, but it also brings serious midday heat. It’s easy to underestimate just how strong the sun can be, even with a breeze off the ocean. Many travelers find themselves drained after just a few hours outside without enough shade, water, or sunscreen.

If you’re planning outdoor adventures like hiking, ATV tours, or snorkeling, aim for early mornings or late afternoons whenever possible. And don’t forget that cloud cover doesn’t mean you’re safe from sunburn here.

Local Tip:
Pack a reusable insulated water bottle and a light long-sleeve UV shirt. You’ll stay cooler and save yourself from buying endless plastic water bottles.

Not Planning Transportation

At first glance, Playa Flamingo feels walkable, and it is, in parts, but things are more spread out than they seem. Getting from your condo to the marina, a favorite restaurant, or neighboring beaches often means more walking than you’d expect under a strong sun. Taxis and shuttles exist but aren’t always immediately available like they might be in larger cities.

Golf carts are a popular, fun option for guests staying nearby, while rental cars are ideal if you plan to explore farther during your trip.

Local Tip:
Reserve golf carts or rental cars early, especially during holidays and high season. Inventory can run out quickly, and prices can spike last-minute.

Sticking to Just One Beach

It’s easy to arrive in Flamingo, fall in love with the powdery white sand and calm waters, and never leave. But if you do, you’ll miss some of the region’s other premier beaches. Within a 10–20 minute drive, you can reach completely different environments: Playa Conchal’s sparkling shell beach, Potrero’s calm bay, or the hidden coves of Danta and Dantita near Las Catalinas.

Each beach has a different personality. Some are perfect for snorkeling, while others better for long swims, paddleboarding, or just getting away from crowds.

Local Tip:
Pack a lightweight cooler, and foldable beach chairs, which are always available at Colibri Hospitality properties, and make a half-day adventure out of exploring. Many beaches nearby have little to no facilities, so a little preparation makes the day better.

Waiting Too Long to Book Activities

Spontaneity is part of the pura vida spirit. But when it comes to tours and excursions, a little planning goes a long way. Catamaran cruises, ATV tours, dive trips, and sunset horseback rides can fill up weeks (or even months) in advance during peak seasons. Waiting until the day before can limit your choices or leave you stuck with the less desirable time slots, or no option at all.

If you already know you want to sail at sunset, dive the Catalinas Islands, or take a guided snorkeling tour, it’s worth booking as soon as possible.

Local Tip:
Ask your property manager (or hosts like Colibri Hospitality) for trusted, local tour recommendations. You’ll often get better service and fair pricing compared to mass-market booking platforms.

Expecting a Big Nightlife Scene

Playa Flamingo is all about laid-back energy, not late-night parties. While there are a few lively bars and beachfront happy hours, the vibe here leans more toward sunset cocktails and quiet dinners, not nightclubs or all-night dancing.

If nightlife is a big priority, consider spending an evening in nearby Tamarindo (about 30 minutes south), where you’ll find a much busier bar and restaurant scene.

Local Tip:
For a fun local night out without leaving Flamingo, check the schedule at the Flamingo Marina Village with occasional live music, open-air markets, and sunset events pop up during high season.

🌅 Wrapping It Up

A little planning and local insight can make a big difference in your Playa Flamingo experience. Whether you’re here to unwind or explore every cove and trail, avoiding these small mistakes helps you make the most of your time on Costa Rica’s golden coast.

At Colibri Hospitality, we know these towns well, and we’re always happy to share what we’ve learned.
